The processor is the first thing to look at. You can upgrade to a Dual-Core T1600 1.66GHz Celeron for $20, or to a Core 2 Duo P8600 for $180. The Dual-Core Celeron actually has very reasonable performance and should be quite capable for general productivity needs. It's a Core 2 chip (Merom Series), so it's not exactly a slouch. If you have bigger performance demands, the P8600 is what you'll be looking at, but the Celeron T1600 would probably be more than adequate for many buyers.

It's also worth mentioning that this Vostro 1220 has an integrated webcam, and that all Vostro 1220s have an optical drive. That's something you don't see in all 12" laptops for sure.
